If you don’t have such a checklist, then take the time to make one. All too often many campers will find out, after they arrive at their favorite camping hot spot, that they are without some important items that they really didn’t want to forget. Of course, many people think of the obvious stuff to pack for their camping adventure, but it’s those incidental things that usually come out and bite you. To prevent yourself from frustration when you begin setting up the camping site, take the time now to plan ahead and make, or breakout, that camping checklist.

One of the huge benefits to having a camping checklist is that it allows to you know what you have on hand versus what you’ll need to purchase. When you take the time to have a thorough list of the camping gear needed for your trip; you will have a much easier time getting prepared, not to mention the obvious thing, that you won’t forget important camping essentials. In addition to this, you’ll know exactly what you will have to purchase when you determine gear needs to be replaced. Camping season is a time for exploring the great outdoors, connecting with family and friends, and truly enjoying the natural world. Whether one is a first timer or an experienced camper, there is always something new to learn and experience. While camping season used to be associated only with summer months, there are many opportunities to enjoy camping throughout the year. The key to a successful camping season is the same as the Boy Scout motto: “Be prepared.”

There are as many ways to camp as there are people who want to camp. For those who prefer a true backwoods adventure, the combination of hiking and backpacking with their camping experience requires a different type of equipment and preparation than those who choose to drive to a state forest or private campground. Certain types of equipment are vital, no matter what style of camping is preferred.

First, even the most intrepid camper needs to sleep! A sturdy sleeping bag is most campers’ choice; sleeping bags are designed to accommodate different temperature requirements from lightweight bags for summer camping to below zero “mummy bags” for mid-winter adventures. But a sleeping bag is not really enough for a good night’s sleep-the ground is a hard mattress!

The wise outdoorsman will choose to put something between his back and the ground. In this, as with sleeping bags, there are a variety of options to choose from, depending on the type of camping. The lightest weight and most portable choice is a simple foam camping pad which weighs less than a pound. For a backpacker, this is a good choice. However, someone who is using his car or truck as transportation may choose an air mattress or even a portable cot!

Cooking is another essential element for every type of camping. While the traditional image of cooking over an open fire may be considered part of the ultimate camping experience, many factors make campfire cooking a less desirable option. Modern camping stoves are lightweight and offer more flexibility than a fire. A good camp stove can boil a quart of water in less than 4 minutes; yet it weighs less than 2 pounds!

Once the heat source is decided on, cookware must be selected. Again, choices are nearly limitless! The simplest choice is a stick for grilling hot dogs or marshmallows, but this isn’t a practical choice for a hungry camper. Outdoor cookware sets are nearly as extensive as those a gourmet chef uses. One of the lightest choices is a set which features multi-purpose components made of sturdy stainless steel, ideal for a hiking trip. Other styles of cookware include cast iron dutch ovens, grills, bake ware, and even woks.

Beyond the necessities and preparation for camping, the underlying joy of camping season is the same for all campers. Camping season, whether it is a New England summer, a southwestern fall, or an Alaskan winter, gives people an escape from their daily lives. It represents a connection with the natural world that is usually lost in worlds of skyscrapers, highways, and mundane responsibilities. The rat race is suspended on a camping trip, replaced by long walks, canoe rides, relaxing around a campfire or a myriad of other activities.

Everyone finds something special about camping. People of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to refresh and recharge themselves; it doesn’t matter if one hikes the back country or drives an RV into campground. By choosing to visit where they must adopt new behaviors and conform to different rules, campers create a new world for themselves each trip. For them, camping season is never ending.

Planning your Oregon Camping Trip

One of the great things about planning an Oregon camping trip is the number of options visitors have, both in things to do and see and in where to stay. With nearly 100 state and federal Oregon campgrounds and even more privately owned facilities, the challenge won’t be finding Oregon campgrounds, it will be deciding which ones to choose.

When to Go

For most people, work and school schedules often help determine when they can take an Oregon vacation. Those with kids typically have to wait for the summer months if they want to visit for more than a few days. For most this works out great because Oregon weather is at its warmest, and it is the peak of the travel season so all the Oregon campgrounds and attractions are open. Reservations are recommended during the summer months as many of the most popular campgrounds tend to fill up fast.

Many festivals are held in the summer, wild and cultivated flowers are in bloom, and there is even a resident group of whales along the coast for those that want to experience Oregon’s legendary whale watching.

Whale watching is at its peak in March, making spring an ideal time to visit Oregon, especially the coastal area. Snowmelt also increases the water levels in rivers, creating churning rapids just waiting to be kayaked or rafted.

Autumn is a good time to visit if you plan to fish Oregon coastal rivers and streams. Steelhead and salmon enter these waters to spawn beginning in September and continuing into late fall. Forest Service offices provide information on fishing conditions in their areas, as do websites for the local communities.

Fall is also a good time to visit one of Oregon’s vineyards. The Willamette Valley, slightly inland from Oregon’s northwest coast, is known as wine country, and there are numerous wineries that offer tours and tastings.

In addition to fishing and wine tasting, the fall foliage is in full color and the Oregon camping sites are typically less crowded than in summer months. Contact the Oregon Fall Foliage Hotline at 1-800-547-5445 to find peak color times for the areas you plan to visit.

Winter is the perfect time to visit Oregon if you like skiing, snowboarding, and other snow activities. In the winter months, average inland daytime temperatures are often in the 40s. The ocean climate helps keep temperatures relatively mild, and winter camping in Oregon can be cozy and comfortable with proper clothing and camping equipment. Even in mid January, temperatures often reach into the 50s in the coastal areas.

Many of the state park campgrounds remain open year round although running water may not be available. Fewer families come to Oregon in the winter months, so if you like quiet getaways, this may be the best time to visit Oregon.

Choosing Oregon Camping Sites

City living: Portland, Eugene and several other larger cities in Oregon have numerous campsites close to town for those that want to be close to the action but still enjoy the fun of RV travel or tenting it. Even Oregon’s more populated areas are surrounded by forests, mountains, and waterways, so finding a natural setting is not difficult.

Private campgrounds in Oregon: There are hundreds of private campgrounds throughout all areas of Oregon. Some cater to families with children and offer playgrounds, activities, and other kid-friendly features. Others are more basic or focus on nature and peaceful settings. No matter what your areas of interest and your camping style, you can likely find a private campground to fit your needs. Begin by contacting visitor information offices or city chambers of commerce in the area of the state you plan to visit.

Oregon state park camping: The number of state parks, scenic sites and recreation areas in Oregon is simply amazing. While some of these are day use only facilities, many provide overnight camping with both tent and RV sites. Often, these Oregon state park camping sites are located in some of the state’s most beautiful scenery, and fees are typically comparable or less than those at privately owned campgrounds.

For a truly unique experience, some Oregon state park camping areas offer camping in tepees, yurts and covered wagons. Camping Mattress Information – Learn About Valuable Guidelines for You

When we were first married, my husband and I used to camp several times a year. It was good to get away from the neighbourhood on weekends since we lived in a duplex. And because camping was so much cheaper than staying at a hotel, it fit our budget. Sleeping on the ground was the worse part about camping for me. We tried using the floating air mattresses that we used in the lake, as our camping mattress in the tent. The sleeping bags slipped off and the mattress was noisy each time you shifted even just a little. We decided we should spend some money for a good camping mattress if we were going to continue camping.

Very good camping mattress was out of our price range at that time. We ended up using a thick foam that we bought from a fabric store as our camping mattress. It was better than sleeping on the ground, but it was bulky to bring along and to store when we were not using it.

We stopped camping for several years, but we have lately started to take an interest in it again. I said to my husband that the first thing we must have is a camping mattress. We started looking at what is on the market now and realized that there are various choices for a camping mattress. There is the inflatable camping mattress that looks like being a small step higher than the floating air mattress that we had tried earlier. And there is the self inflating camping mattress. It inflates as it is rolled out.

You close the valve once it has inflated itself. To deflate, you open the valve and press down on the camping mattress. This looked simple to do and not hard to store, but it was not very thick, so we questioned the the level of comfort. We also considered another camping mattress that was inflatable with a separate pump. This special camping mattress is sold in several sizes. The inflation time was about five minutes. The pump has batteries that are rechargeable, so you could bring it to the camp site already charged and then plug it in when you go back home. This option is not too expensive for a camping mattress, but it did not come with any possible way to store it.

The camping mattress that we finally bought was a queen size mattress with a built pump in it. The camping mattress inflates in about a minute and deflates flat in even less time. The mattress and pump fit into a duffle case which is the size of a sleeping bag. This camping mattress cost more, but we may also use it as an extra bed on the situations when we have more visitors than bed space. With our new camping mattress we will be camping and sleeping in comfort.

The Best Camping Gear for Your Camping Vacation

The best camping gear for your trip largely depends on what kind of camping vacation you’ve planned. You could be car camping, RV camping, back country camping or even canoe camping and each trip has special considerations.

The easiest trip to plan for of course is a trip in your trailer or RV. A vacation of this type is fun because it it gives you all the luxury of home in a sort of “condensed” space. Even in a a smaller trailer though the floor plans and sleeping arrangements are very well thought out giving you maximum sleeping comfort and space. Kids love to be in trailers and RV’s so this type of camping vacation is really perfect for you and your family to get away from home for a few days. The kids will love it and both parents are going to be comfortable and cozy. As far as the camping gear goes when you’re in an RV you can bring pretty much anything at all that you wish to bring without it being a huge burden. Many are equipped with running water and all the basic necessities of home so in that sense this is really the easiest type of camping vacation to go on. I suppose though you do need to know in advance which campsites support RV camping.

Of course some folks don’t believe that camping involves sleeping in a bed and having your home kitchen at your disposal and would rather “rough it” a little bit. My thoughts exactly… But the thing is you need to pack a little lighter in order to get everything you need. You can buy specialty camping cookware and sleeping pads, camp stoves, and sleeping bags that are all of an ultralight nature and they are therefore easier to pack and carry. You don’t need to pack like this so much if you’re using your car as a homebase or even a site that you can drive up to directly but if you decide that camping and hiking will be the vacation for you then you definitely should consider using some of this gear. It really does make life easier when you’re on the trail.

Of course there are the folks that prefer canoe camping or kayak camping. Well this is a lot of fun, and very relaxing in it’s own way but if you plan on having to do any portaging on your trip then it may be done more easily if you brought along a set of wheels so you don’t have to unpack your boat every time you come to the next shoreline. As well you would be extremely wise to use drybags for your gear that you can clip right to your boat. This will not only do an excellent job of keeping your stuff dry but will keep you from losing it all in the event of an upset. Boats do tip over on occasion and you need to be as prepared for it as you can be by wearing a life jacket, clothing that dries quickly when wet and all of the required safety items. You can even buy drybags that double as a backpack! As far as your camping gear goes I’ve always felt that the ultralight gear is best suited for this type of trip but let’s face it, if you’re the type of person to go on a backwoods adventure for a few days away from everybody, then you likely won’t mind spending a few extra bucks on the right gear to help you do it more easily.

So I guess the bottom line is this. All camping gear is not created equal. What you may use for camping with your kids and family may not be the best to use when back country camping. The same thing applies the other way around. If you’re new to it then the best thing to do is research what people are using and why and make your decisions based on that. You don’t have to spend the most money on an item to get quality but if you “nickel and dime” yourself on your gear it will likely come back to haunt you in that the gear simply will not last. Do your research, spend a bit but not more than you need to, and you’ll find your gear will last you for years and years to come.
